How to Choose a Dress Shirt Cuff Style
All of the little details count, so consider the variety of different options when buying a dress shirt. Below is a breakdown of the decisions you can make and the appeal of each, be sure why you select a particular cuff:
CONVERTIBLE CUFF
Our standard shirt cuff. It's a traditional barrel cuff (rectangular piece of fabric with square corners that's closed with a button). However, we put a second button-hole on the other side of the cuff that is unseen when worn normally buttoned, but can be opened up and worn with cufflinks. This makes the shirt much more versatile.
ROUNDED CUFF
Our rounded cuff is simply a barrel cuff but we've sanded the sharp corners off. Rounded cuffs give off a slightly more casual and relaxed feel so we generally pair them with our button-down collars and, appropriately, our rounded collars.
MITERED CUFF
The mitred cuff is a barrel cuff that has had the corners "mitered" or cut at an angle. It's an interesting detail that creates a sharp look fitting for more professional or formal occasions. Like our standard convertible cuff, our mitered cuff features the extra button hole, allowing them to be worn with or without links.
FRENCH CUFF
Our French cuff is our most formal cuff. French cuffs are twice as long as regular cuffs and then folded back on themselves and closed with cuff links. They have a very pronounced look and we usually pair them with our more debonair collar styles or formal shirts.
TWO-BUTTON SCALLOPED CUFF
Our two-buttoned scalloped cuff is one of our most unique styles. It features a two-button closure and a curved or "scalloped" cuff edge. We think it provides a distinctive look, particularly when seen poking out under a jacket sleeve.
Barrel Cuff vs French Cuff
The first step is to decide if you'd like to go for a Barrel Cuff or French Cuff. You'll need cuff links or cuff knots to close your French Cuffs, whereas Barrel Cuffs are simple button closure. French cuffs are definitely more formal and should be the natural choice if you're buying a tuxedo shirt or wedding shirt.
Some guys love French Cuffs, others love Barrel Cuffs. Typically French Cuffs will be "more work" and be more of a statement, whereas Barrel Cuffs are more common and subtle.
One Button vs Two Button
If you want a Barrel Cuff, the next choice is where you'd like a one-button or two-button cuff. One-button cuffs are a little more subtle and also shorter in length than their two-button counterparts. Those who want a slightly more formal looks may want to consider two-buttons–also think about these if you have particularly long arms.
Rounded vs Mitered vs Straight Cuffs
Some cuffs are rounded, others are mitered, and some have a straight cuff end. Rounded cuffs are probably most common and subtle, whereas mitered have a bit more of a "design" to them. The straight cuff is probably the least common for a barrel cuff, but can be great on a casual shirt.
